International Activism Continues: DFF Keynotes Conferences In Seoul, Tokyo



DFF Participates in International Conference on North Korea Human Rights and Refugees, Leads Demonstration Against China’s Violent Repatriations: Once again DFF participated in the International Conference on North Korean Human Rights and Refugees which was held in Seoul in February. DFF was responsible for moderating one of the sessions and for chairing the Conference Resolutions Committee.

During the conference, DFF once again led a demonstration on behalf of the North Korean refugees in China which received much press coverage from the local media, as well as from CNN. A list was read aloud of the North Korean refugees seized by Chinese police and all the humanitarian workers, including American citizens, in jail in China for helping North Korea Refugees.

Tokyo: During meetings with Japanese leaders in Tokyo, DFF President Suzanne Scholte urged they join the fight for freedom and human rights in North Korea. At the Rescue Movement’s first International Conference on North Korean and Chinese Human Rights violations, Scholte urged the Japanese to focus on the entire range of North Korea human rights issues and partner with the North Korea defectors and other NGOs to bring about change in North Korea. “The key to solving the abduction issue is to bring human rights to North Korea,” Scholte explained.

DFF’s Keynote at “Seoul Summit” Leads to Front Page Coverage in Major Korean Papers: DFF’s President Scholte was the keynote speaker along with Kim Seung Min, director of Free North Korea, at the Seoul Summit Promoting Human Rights in North Korea organized by Freedom House and South Korean organizations. Scholte’s keynote led to front page coverage in the major South Korean papers and her comments caused a lot of commentary on South Korean television and radio throughout the week.


During the Seoul visit, DFF was able to visit Free North Korea Radio and Hanawon, the facility for North Koreans who have recently escaped to South Korea.
